I help run Ace Tour of San Francisco, a bus company that concentrates on Indian casino tours at the moment. Was trying to get back into tourism, but seems like nobody wants to come to the US now, very few groups coming in, esp. in this sour global economy.
There are so many things one needs to know about and watch for in a bus company. For example, I just got the book that Highway Inspection Stations (those "truck scales" you drive by every day without noticing). Even buses get inspected there, and this book, which costs $25, by the way, tells me what criteria the inspectors use to flag the vehicle "out of service". Basically, it's something that threatens safety in a major way. Some are rather obscure, but some are so obvious that it's amazing what the drivers/owners are thinking of when they got on the road.
Then there are the drivers... Each driver must be added to CA PUC's list, as well as DMV's "pull list", among other things. I'll explain that in my next entry.
